THE CORBETT TIGER RESERVE

The magnificent hill forests of Corbett Tiger Reserve are only 25km from Camp Corbett and the Bijrani sector can easily be reached for a half-day visit. Corbett was the first National Park in India, established in 1936, and was the first Project Tiger Reserve, notified in 1973. We have 24 years experience in arranging itineraries to Corbett Tiger Reserve, and can show you the very best of Corbett with a highly  experienced guide.

The scenery here is truly wild and breathtaking: majestic sal forest; wide expenses of elephant grass, and the gorges of the Ramganga River, with a backdrop of  high mountain ridges of the Siwalik Hills. The total protected area is 1319 sq.km. Wildlife includes tiger, leopard, elephant, sloth bear, mugger and gharial crocodile, python, pine marten, otter, wild boar, sambhar, chithal, ghoral, hog deer and 575 species of birds. The Reserve is estimated to contain about 130-140 adult tigers and is of major importance as a sanctuary for the Asian elephant. The Reserve truly lives up to its name as 'The land of trumpet, roar and song'.

 Jungle hideaway

If you wish to visit the main part of the Reserve, an overnight stay is required.

You have a choice of staying at the tourist complex in the centre of the Reserve (Dhikala), or at an old-style Forest Rest House (Sarapduli), which is located in a peaceful jungle setting near the Ramganga River, for 2 to 4 days/1 to 3 nights.

Dhikala is more central and is more convenient for obtaining elephant rides, whereas Sarapduli is a nicer 'jungle experience'.

Tiger-tracking from elephant back through the misty chaur grasslands in the early morning is an unforgettable experience.

Alternatively, we will explore the Reserve by Gypsy/Jeep. Although the elephant ride is more atmospheric, the Gypsy/Jeep is a more stable platform for photography.

If you only wish to make a short visit to Corbett Tiger Reserve, we can easily arrange a half-day visit to Bijrani or Jhirna sectors. Bijrani is only 25km from Camp Corbett and can be reached in 45 minutes. Bijrani is noted for tiger sightings, and Jhirna is a noted for its rich bird life.

The main sector of the Reserve is open from mid-November to mid-June and requires  booking well in advance. Bijrani opens in mid-October and Jhirna is open all year.

       Elephant Safari
Please note that elephant rides can only be arranged and paid for when you have arrived inside the Reserve, as per Forest Department regulations. All itineraries start and finish at Camp Corbett or Delhi. Please contact us or refer to our itineraries page for more details and our latest prices.
